What's New For the 2021 Volvo XC40?

The 2021 Volvo XC40 gets a few notable updates and changes for the latest model year. The XC40 is part of the first generation that launched in 2019. There are some changes to the model's aesthetics and features this year, but the most notable difference is the addition of the new Recharge trim level. The Recharge is the first all-electric SUV in the family. It is a new addition to the lineup this year and brings drivers the option of a fuel-efficient yet powerful electric vehicle. The XC40 continues on the brand's tradition of creating vehicles with smooth, sleek, and stylish Scandinavian design.

Which Features Are Available for 2021?

In addition to the Recharge EV trim, there are three trim levels available for the 2021 XC40. The first trim, the Momentum, its standard features include lane-keeping aid, 12-inch digital driver information display, and automatic emergency braking. The exterior of the Momentum shines bright with LED headlights and 18-inch silver alloy wheels. It also has a power-operated liftgate for convenient loading and unloading. Keyless ignition is another notable feature. The interior also gets a power-adjustable driver's seat and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

The Momentum and the R-Design, which is the second trim, come with cloth and faux-leather seats. They both get an eight-inch display screen outfitted with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Inscription trim upgrades to leather seats and receives a nice upscale touch to its cabin with wood trim. It also has unique wheels. The R-Design and Inscription trims both add more safety features and technology, including a wireless charging pad and auto-dimming exterior mirrors. They both get a hands-free liftgate. The Recharge features an Android-based tech interface and an innovative driver's information system that provides real-time information and updates on the car's performance.

The Recharge comes with a 78-kWh battery that produces over 400 HP and more than 485 LB-FT in torque. With this capacity, the Volvo can go from 0-60 in less than five seconds. Volvo estimates that the XC40 Recharge's range is between 220 and 240 miles. It can charge from wholly depleted to 80% in 40 minutes.

The regular XC40 has a choice of two turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine configurations: one with 187 hp, 221 lb-ft of torque, and front-wheel drive. The 248 hp version has 258 lb-ft of torque and drives all four wheels. Both engines are mated to a standard 8-speed transmission. Fuel economy on the 187 hp version is 23 city, 32 highway, 22 in the city, and 30 highway on the higher horsepower engine.

Standard safety on the 2021 XC40 includes lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring is available through upgrades in certain technology packages.
