Is the Volvo XC60 2 or 4-wheel drive?
When looking at buying a Volvo XC60, many prospective buyers ask if it is a 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive vehicle. The true answer is, it's neither. Like most Volvo models, it utilizes Volvo's unique all-wheel-drive system. You can learn more about the system below or see your local Volvo Glendale dealer for even more information.
How is Volvo AWD unique
Volvo's AWD system uniqueness comes from its combination of specific design choices. The most distinguishing aspect of Volvo's AWD system is its front-wheel drive bias. Most AWD systems distribute power equally between axles. Volvos prioritize the front wheel in normal driving conditions for better fuel efficiency and handling. Power is diverted to the rear wheels when sensors detect a loss of traction.Â
Another unique feature of Volvo's AWD system is its use of electrohydraulic coupling, which is more precise and responsive. It allows for quicker adjustments in power delivery based on real-time driving conditions.
Volvo's AWD system is also singular in that it is seamlessly integrated with their electronic stability control (ESC) system. This produces a more coordinated response to challenging road conditions and maximizes overall vehicle control.
Now that we've established what and how the Volvo AWD system works across all vehicles, let's discuss how it pertains to the XC60 specifically.
The History of the XC60Â
The XC60, also commonly referred to as simply the X60, is a luxurious, safe and technologically advanced SUV that caters to discerning drivers. Its human-centric design, sleek and modern aesthetics and range of powerful and electrified performance set it apart in its class.
The XC60 was first introduced globally in 2008, but did not arrive in America until 2009 and was designated as a 2010 model. It came with a choice of two engines, a 3.2-liter Inline 6 or a 3.0-liter turbo version. From the very beginning, it offered drivers their choice of either Front-Wheel Drive or Volvo's unique all-wheel-drive system.
It was given its first refresh in 2014. Some updates it included slight exterior tweaks to the grille, headlights, taillights or bumpers, new materials introduced in the interior of the vehicle, and a wider variety of engine options.
The second generation of the XC60 began with the 2018 model and was built on a completely different platform. The exterior received a more modern and refined look and the cabin was completely overhauled.
XC60 Models Explained
There are three different XC60 trim levels:

It comes with a touchscreen infotainment system, 10-speaker audio system, heated front seats on the AWD models and a variety of safety features like lane keeping assist, road departure migration and oncoming collision avoidance.

R-Design
The R-design offers the same features as the Momentum with a sportier look. It also includes illuminated door handles and front seats, as well as shift paddles for the steering wheel.
Inscription
The Inscription trim builds upon the Momentum trim, is similar to the R-Design, but also includes features like four-zone climate control, leather and wood wrapped dash.
